Description: Christ is laid in the tomb by those who remained faithful after His crucifixion. The dead Christ lies on his back on the anointing stone, with a winding sheet unfolded upon it. The Virgin Mary cradles his head in her arms, and touches his cheek with hers. John, the beloved disciple, looks sorrowfully on, crouching down, Joseph, stands at the foot of the stone, with the winding sheet. Nicodemus leans on a ladder and looks at Christ. Next to the Virgin, Mary Magdalene as well as other weeping women look on behind them is the cross.
Though marked by sorrow, this sacred moment points beyond death to the hope and promise of the Resurrection.
